Covenant Men Board Meeting
March 18, 2000
Cascades Camp and Conference Center

Present: Kerm Paulsen, Dick Lundberg, Harold Ulfers and John Tissell

REPORTS: Since the last meeting $275 has been received for Village Ministries, $60 for the log cabin fund and $55 for the general fund.

FALL RETREAT DISCUSSION:

CONFERENCE ANNUAL MEETING: Information on the Men's Breakfast will be included in the registration packet sent to each delegate.

ALASKA: Per Bill Hartman, the barge is scheduled to reach Nome June 1 or 2. However he has heard rumors that the ice extends further south than it did last year. Bill expects to be at KICY from May 10 and on. MARC and others are working to get ownership of the "White" Covenant High School building transferred to either MARC or the church. Currently they are moving the building material from the gym to the building. One goal is to remodel it enough to make suitable housing for Don Irvine's family. While there were possibilities of Irvine's moving to a house owned by Curtis Ivanhoff, there are apparently problems with this house.

CONFERENCE PROJECTS: We checked with King County regarding a permit to build steps and handicap ramp for the Korean Church in Kirkland. The church does not have the permit and the office building does not meet zoning requirements and was placed on the property without a building permit. The church was notified of the violation in mid January and given one week to respond. The building was placed significantly higher than shown on the drawings for the ramp and the ramp will have to be redesigned to avoid having it extend into the church building. (The building floor height requires a 5 foot flat landing at the mid point of the ramp.)

SCHOLARSHIPS: Kerm met the "Russian" scholarship recipient and was very impressed.

CASCADES CAMP AND CONFERENCE CENTER: The state has published rules defining what electrical work can be done by volunteers. In the case of a nonprofit organization, the work must be done by or under the direction of a licensed contractor and the workmen must be certified electricians or trainees. The ratio of electricians to trainees is set by the state.  After the board meeting, we completed the mounting of boxes, panels and fans in the 3 log cabins.  The actual wiring has been contracted. Holes were cut in the ceiling of the finished cabin and pull cord fished to each light location. A coil of wire was found behind the paneling at each light location, however the location of the other end of the wire is not known. Also no wire was found for the required smoke detector. Holes were drilled for each outside light as well as through the steel framing anchor on the floor for the conduit to the entry light switch.  Bunk bed construction will be March 24 and 25. A volunteer is needed to help with ripping of the lumber March 23. The templates and jigs used to construct the beds were checked. Other than the final assembly jig, all others have been destroyed. This was unexpected since in the past the jigs have been labeled and carefully stored. Rebuilding the jigs will add a day to the building of the bunks.

NEXT MEETING: The next board meeting will be April 15, 2000 at Cascades.

John Tissell, Secretary
