Covenant Men Board Meeting
September 14, 2002 Cascades Camp and Conference Center

Present: Jeff Wolf, John Prouty, Harold Ulfers, Bud Olson, Keith Olson, Tom Moline, Dick Lundberg, Greg Swensen and John Tissell

The meeting was chaired by acting president Jeff Wolf and opened with scripture from Proverbs 14. Prayer was then offered by those present with particular concern for the coming retreat, work in Alaska and insight for our discussion.

FALL RETREAT DISCUSSION (September 27-29): In past years, Kerm has sent brochures to men who had attended a retreat any of the past 2 or 3 years. This year this has not been done andcould be the reason registrations are lagging. Several men, who attend regularly but are not members of a Covenant church, have questioned why they haven't received any information on this falls retreat. (It was decided in a discussion among two board members after the meeting to send post cards to as many of those who attended either of the past two years as possible.)

Dick Lundberg will confirm the speaker arrangements with the Conference office. He will also arrange for any last minute retreat reservations to be FAXed to John T.

It was suggested that the men copy Covenant Women and assign all retreat preparation, including choice of speaker, to a committee.

The nominating committee is continuing work on a list of candidates for the election at the retreat.

ALASKA: John Tissell reported on the summer trip to Alaska. Together with Greg Swensen, a new phone system was installed at MARC (Missionary Aviation Repair Center), the shop and first dorm cabin at AEC (Amundsen Educational Center) were wired and telephone wiring and jacks were installed in the new duplex at Alaska Christian College. AEC is in need of more volunteer workers and also needs donations or pledges of financial support.

The last scheduled work party for this year left in mid August after doing an extremely large amount of work. They completed the framing of one cabin, completed the foundation and first floor of the second and placed the forms for the foundation of the third. In addition they installed the septic tank and drain field which will serve the shop and the three cabins.

The well driller installed the pump in the well. He also replaced a broken connection that allowed water to flow from the well. The well is artesian so it has to be sealed. The well can not be put into service until 230 volt power is available at the shop and the shop is heated sufficiently to prevent the water system from freezing.

The final electrical hook up to the shop could not be made since the power company intended to extend the temporary construction service to the building and they did not do the work until several weeks later. Also the phone company did not place the buried wire to the building in spite of the service being ordered weeks before.

CASCADES CAMP AND CONFERENCE CENTER: Tom reported that there were more campers and decisions than past years. The staff is working smoothly on current projects. A capital fund drive is being planned. Among the priorities for the funds raised will be the train and completion of the Nisqually Center. Rebuilding and/or moving the barbecue was discussed.

NEXT MEETING: The next board meeting will be 9:30 AM, Saturday, October 12 at Cascades Camp and Conference Center.

John Tissell, Secretary
