The following is an introductory guide
for work teams praying about working on projects in Alaska.
Schedule and travel dates: Typically, we are ask that groups try to arrive on a Monday and stay for a
1 1/2 weeks and fly out the next Friday. Most projects are done in Spring and
Summer.
Transportation: Groups are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. Keith
Hamilton's wife (Debbie) runs her own travel agency and would be available to
help in making travel plans (you do not have to use this service it is just an
option). The company name is "Royal Wings, Inc." The phone number is
(303) 422-5512 and e-mail to: debhamilton1@aol.com.
To get to Soldotna (ACC or MARC): Fly to
Anchorage (Alaska Airlines) and then take a commuter flight to Kenai (15
minutes from Soldotna) or drive your own vehicle (from Seattle it is a 5 day
drive).
To get to Bethel: Fly to Anchorage and then
to Bethel (Alaska Airlines).
To get to Nome (KICY): Fly to Anchorage and
then to Nome (Alaska Airlines).
To get to Fairbanks (Irvine): Fly to
Anchorage and then to Fairbanks (Alask Airlines) or drive (from Seattle it is
a 5 day drive).
To get to Unalakleet: Fly to Nome and then
take a commuter flight to Unalakleet.
Personnel: We are in great need of general contractor type people. Teams should have
as many skilled laborers as possible: electricians, plumbers, general
construction, etc. Teams may be comprised of adults and responsible high
school students. However, teams should be predominantly adults.
Money: Credit Cards are accepted everywhere. ATM's are not readily available.
Checks may not be accepted by local merchants. Money is needed for food and
some miscellaneous supplies.
Food and lodging: Typically lodging is provided in most cases at no cost. Some locations
have motels, others provide a empty house. The project team should provide/pay
for their own food.
Tools: Bring your own hand tools appropriate for the project that you are working
on. Groups can pack up to 70 Lbs. in a Rubber Maid type container and check it
as a bag. Commuter airlines may charge by the pound for luggage. Most projects
provide the larger tools and all project materials.
Local Transportation: The projects provide local transportation while on site.
Fishing and R & R: Fishing is available at most sites, though seasonal. Soldotna is an
excellent fishing location. Nome is good for site seeing. The smaller villages
have limited facilities and minimal recreational opportunities.
Clothing: Jeans, sweatshirts, work boots, light jackets, work gloves, personal
hygiene supplies, etc. will be required. Daytime temperatures in the Spring
range from 35F to 65F. At night the temperature drops to 0F. |
